Although he came from Pistoia, Gimignani was a quinessential exponent of the classical Roman baroque school, being a pupil of Pietro da Cortona by 1630. This drawing shows his favoured combination of media for finished studies, brown ink and grey wash, with highlights picked out in white bodycolour. While the purpose of the study is unknown, the elaborate composition with tondi in the corners supported by putti and garlands of flowers, and the highly finished quality of this drawing suggest it was intended for publication as a print or for a book.
