Leyden 1606 - 1669 Amsterdam
Man Wearing a Turban Pen and brown ink PROVENANCE This interesting portrait drawing shows Rembrandt’s attraction to Leonardo da Vinci’s caricature and grotesque head studies which the artist would have known through prints. It is notable that Rembrandt made a copy of Leonardo’s Last Supper, in reverse and also taken from an early 17th century print, in the 1640s, when we can assume the present drawing was made. Peter Schatborn and Martin Royalton-Kisch have independently seen and confirmed the attribution of this sheet in 2006. |
