b. 1956 In 2006 David Stern exhibited his potent impasto paintings for the first time in the UK, at Thomas Williams Fine Art. David Stern, born in Germany in 1956, has been living and working in New York since 1995. He currently exhibits at Galerie Brennecke in Berlin and Galerie Joachim Blueher in Cologne, amongst others, and was formerly at Rosenberg + Kaufman in New York. Additionally, a selection of Stern’s work is currently touring around the U.S. He has work in numerous private collections and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Heavily concerned by contemporary politics and influenced by European Abstract Expressionists, especially the London School, this work typifies his consistently passionate use of paint and the palette knife, both used with broad, overscaled gestures. The recent portraits and work from his Scotch and Orange series communicate his political response to events that have shaped 21st century America, as well as him as an artist.
